In addition to the eminent author, the exhibition “Goethe and the plants” visualises Goethe as a high administrative official and member of the government of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar — and as a life-long lover of the natural sciences. He studied optics, geology (he was responsible for several mining projects), mineralogy, climatology, zoology, and botany.
At a late age Goethe even declared that a significant part of his life had been devoted to science, not only with inclination and passion, but also with great consistent effort; and he definitely had a claim to be taken seriously as a scientific researcher (1830).

The German National Library in cooperation with the Institute for Children’s Book Research of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main extend a cordial invitation to leaf through children’s worlds of a present-day picture book. Stories relate in quite different ways to Struwwelpeter as original text of the modern book.
The design structures the exhibition called Struwwelpeter´s Descendants in various, perceptible and interactive spaces. On the one hand you can find the characters like in a kitchen, the bathroom or the living room, on the other hand the Wild Huntsman, Johnny Head-in-Air or the Inky Boys are located in a garden area with fencing and a big tree. An interactive stockpot tells the story Kaspar, a postcard flies away with the message of Robert and the Cruel Frederik presents his soft, innocuous and unbreakable chairs and rolling pin.

Different approaches and shifting perspectives influence the view and conception of the relationship between human beings and objects. This outlook informed the design of a room-filling trade fair booth composed of fissured steles and volumes of various sizes, arranged in such a manner that visitors could walk through them and relate to the exhibits in many different ways.
