A characteristic sight in many regions of Colombia is the ‘panadera’ bicycle: a heavy bike used in rural areas for carrying loads of all kinds. Panadera bicycles are often the only means of transportation in the countryside, and can hold a wide variety of goods. We have travelled through Colombia together on multiple occasions since 2016 – from the Andes to the Caribbean coast, and from the bustling metropolis of Bogotá to the most secluded places in the country. Beyond the typical colors and patterns of Colombia, the pair have particularly vivid memories of one thing above all – the ubiquitous and universal bicycle. During production of the Circo furniture series, it struck them both: the tubular steel frames for Circo furniture are manufactured by artesanos in a small workshop in Bogotá. Besides products for ames, the small family business mostly builds bicycle frames. And so the Bici project was born.
