Goethe and the plants - exhibition design for the Palmengarten

In addition to the eminent author, the exhibition “Goethe and the plants” visualises Goethe as a high administrative official and member of the government of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar — and as a life-long lover of the natural sciences. He studied optics, geology (he was responsible for several mining projects), mineralogy, climatology, zoology, and botany.
At a late age Goethe even declared that a significant part of his life had been devoted to science, not only with inclination and passion, but also with great consistent effort; and he definitely had a claim to be taken seriously as a scientific researcher (1830).

Bell-Table for ABR. Barcelona at ICFF New York

The side table Bell-Table will be lauched by ABR. Barcelona at the ICFF New York from 15 – 18 May 2010. The table serves as a small side table or coffee table. Due to a collage of brass and mouthblown tinted glass it has an interesting appearance and distictive identity. The play with mass and transparency as well as the lightweight and fragile glass base contrasting the solid brass top element represents an alternative to conventional table designs. Both table elements are put together flush thus forming a single unit. The special combination of materials is merged together as the materials mutually reflect each other.

Chalice

Chalice is a suspension lamp or table lamp made of glass and felt. The thin lamp shades are made of hand blown and tinted glass. The combination of different glass layers, various intensities of colours or glossy and frosted surfaces are the characteristics of this design. The collage of material and colour emphasises an unique identity and aesthetic of this lamp. The idea of stacking glass and plugging a breakable material in a strong felt base is contradictory to the material properties and an interesting aspect of Chalice.

Coal Crane in a new Light _ Luminale 2010

In an exposed dock and riverbank venue between the A661 Offenbach-Kaiserlei motorway and the Main riverbank in Offenbach the historical coal crane at the EVO power station will be set in a new scene. The LED-based illuminations emphasise the construction, retrace it or blur it in the nocturnal context. These illuminations in cooperation with Peter Eckart and Reinhard Dienes will be opened for Luminale 2010 and then continue to shine at night.

Tauber-Cabinet at [D3] CONTEST at imm cologne

Tauber-Cabinet will be presented at the [D3] CONTEST during the imm cologne. The idea behind the design of Tauber-Cabinet is based on the dealing with conventional coverings of ventilation shafts. Tauber-Cabinet is a symbiosis between a bench and a sideboard. The typical character of surfaces, covers and structures made of metal is rudimental of the design and the construction. The diagonal bends of the brass plate are important for the stability as well as the pattern. Space and furniture are melded together by the reflections on the brass surface. This contrasts to the the closed and industrial aspect of the metal casing.

Epos for Foundry presented at imm cologne

The shelf Epos is made of solid wood and powder-coated metal elements. The design concept makes a multitude of combinations in the distance of the boards and their length possible. Epos works either as a singular element or as shelving wall in a straight line. The stability of the shelf enable it to be used as a freestanding room divider or as a traditional against-the-wall unit. The idea behind the design is to use timber wedges to fix the shelf together. The construction or deconstruction is based on a minimum of work and tools. To individualize Epos, you have the opportunity to attach different kind of boxes and surfaces to this system.

Once Upon a Chair: Furniture Beyond the Icon

Once Upon a Chair is an international up-to-the minute survey of contemporary furniture design. The book captures the zeitgeist of this rigorous industry by examining current trends and presenting pioneering examples by the world’s most influential designers and emerging talents.
Sebastian Herkner was chosen to be part of this new publication. The collected works indicate a recognisable shift towards progressive responsible designs that make a social impact and the revival of artisanal craft. It further explores how designers are focusing more on process-driven and storytelling concepts as well as the continuing flirtation with material and technological experimentation.
